THE MONTH BETWEEN APRIL AND MAY
A Feature Film and Immersive Installation.
Project Statement
The Month Between April and May is a feature film and immersive installation that combines actors with animation. Aided by a state of the art immersive lab, the project uses cutting-edge technology to take traditional storytelling to new lengths. Exploring themes of belonging within a diaspora, the film teeters between fantasy and a period drama. May, a floating nurse, onboards a hospital train -- the train is five stories tall and is the home to a voluminous crowd of patients and staff. After a month aboard, a patient May knew since her childhood jumps off the train and unravels a secret at the core of the hospital train.
Creative Team
This project brings together two artists whose combined expertise spans film, music composition, animation, and new media:
Kai Tattersall is a Japanese, English and American filmmaker and animator. A founder of 2000blue, he has created films that combine actors with animation. Tattersall won the International AI Film Festival, but later distanced himself from generative AI. His work is exhibited at new media galleries and festivals internationally.
Myles Ortiz-Green is a multidisciplinary composer and PhD candidate at UC San Diego whose work explores interconnectedness and digital identity through the fusion of classical training, jazz improvisation, and experimental electronics. As an alumnus of the prestigious POSSE scholarship program, a graduate of Tulane University, and a participant in Beats by Dre's Inaugural Black Future Creator Program, Ortiz-Green has garnered recognition at major festivals including the Atlanta Horror Film Festival and the 28th Annual DGA Student Film Awards.
Institutional Support & Recognition
This project has secured institutional backing from the following programs:
Qualcomm Institute IDEAS Grant: Selected for a prestigious showcase at UC San Diego's Recombinant Media Lab in Spring 2026, highlighting the project's innovation in multimedia storytelling
UCSD Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts Fellowship: Providing both funding and professional-grade film equipment
Innovation
The Month Between April and May fuses traditional narrative filmmaking with state-of-the-art technology, including:
Sound: Ortiz-Green's expertise in electronic manipulation and field recording will be exhibited in the Recombinant Media Lab, providing spacial audio over thirty-two speakers.
Visual: Tattersall’s animation pipeline uses open-source, non-generative tools to mix actors into animation. All animation elements are sampled from reality and are physically made.
